Congratulations! You’ve just purchased your first pair of hearing aids. Once you’ve purchased your new hearing aids, there are a few accessories you need to keep your new hearing aids in good condition. You will receive a case to store them in and tools to help keep them clean. Besides a case and tools, hearing aid batteries are a necessity for every hearing aid user. In order to run efficiently and effectively, your Beltone hearing aids need a steady source of power.
There are two types of hearing aid batteries, which are rechargeable batteries and zinc-air batteries. Rechargeable hearing aid batteries are environmentally friendly, but the zinc-air button disposable battery is a more popular choice.
Rechargeable hearing aid batteries have noteworthy environmental value. Skip the zinc-air hearing aid batteries and go green with rechargeable hearing aid batteries. An estimated 1.5 billion zinc air hearing aid batteries are sent to the landfill every year. However, an estimated 100 disposable zinc air batteries can be replaced by a recyclable single zinc-air battery. Patients charge their rechargeable hearing aid batteries at night so they are ready to go in the morning. A rechargeable hearing aid battery powers a hearing aid for 24 hours even while using advanced wireless technology.
The most common type of hearing aid battery is the zinc-air disposable battery. Zinc-air batteries are air-activated batteries. The battery contains a sticker which lets them remain inactive until removed. When the sticker is removed, oxygen mixes with the zinc in the battery to activate it. After removing the sticker, the battery must sit for a few minutes before placing it in your hearing aid. This allows air to reach the battery and activate it. Keep in mind that replacing the sticker will not deactivate the battery.
When stored in a room temperature, dry environment, zinc-air batteries can last up to three years. Storing the zinc-air batteries in the refrigerator will reduce the battery life and allow moisture to form.
Hearing aid batteries come in all shapes and sizes. Larger hearing aids require larger batteries; therefore, people with severe or profound hearing loss usually require a higher power, larger battery. There are five different sizes of hearing aid batteries. The sizes from smallest to largest are 5, 10, 312, 13, and 675. Size 5 hearing aid batteries are very uncommon. Hearing aid batteries are smaller than the size of a dime. All manufacturers are required to use certain colors for each hearing aid battery size. Size 5 batteries are red, size 10 batteries are yellow, size 312 batteries are brown, size 13 batteries are orange, and size 675 batteries are blue.
Based on a hearing aid user who wears their hearing aids 16 hours a day, hearing aid batteries can last anywhere from three to 20 days. A size 10 battery lasts three to seven days, a size 312 battery lasts three to 10 days, a size 13 battery lasts six to 14 days, and a size 675 battery lasts nine to 20 days approximately.
In order to get the most out of your hearing aid batteries, these tips will ensure your battery is used to its full potential.
Keep hearing aid batteries away from coins, keys, or other metal objects as they can short circuit the batteries. Always purchase unopened battery packages with the sticker still intact. A hearing aid battery begins to discharge as soon as the sticker is removed. When you’re not wearing your hearing aid, turn it off and open the battery door to minimize battery usage. If you won’t be using the hearing aid for a long time, remove the battery completely. Avoid storing the hearing aid in extreme temperatures to keep from draining the battery.
Hearing aid batteries are available for sale in retail stores, pharmacies, grocery stores, and electronic stores. You can also purchase hearing aid batteries directly from your Hearing Care Practitioner. Hearing Care Practitioners typically use their battery stock fast. Many hearing aid users feel they receive fresher batteries from their Hearing Care Provider. Also, your Hearing Care Practitioner will always know what size battery you need.
